PPTQ 15 March14/3/2015 Made it to semi final with an updated list. Main 21 Mountain 4 Foundry Street Denizen 4 Firedrinker Satyr 4 Monastery Swiftspear 4 Mardu Scout 4 Goblin Rabblemaster 2 Goblin Heelcutter 4 Wild Slash 3 Lightning Strike 2 Searing Blood 4 Stoke the Flames 4 Hordeling Outburst Sideboard 2 Collateral Damage 1 Arc Lightning 4 Eidolon of the Great Revel 2 Peak Eruption 2 Outpost Siege 2 Searing Blood 2 Harness by Force Played with Goblin Heelcutter before and it was underrated prior to GP Miami. Switched it back in with Chandra, Pyromaster going out. Chandra is definitely good but often time it gets stuck in hand or her services was not required. Heelcutter pushes more damage and forces opponent to make unfavourable blocks which induce errors. The sideboard was left unchanged except swapping 2 Collateral Damage with 2 Searing Blood to main. Did not put much thought as I was out late with friends the night before. On with the event. Round 1 vs RW Heroic (Lost 0-2) I had an opportunity to kill a lonely Hero of Iroas but decided to race as I was facing open mana. Did not want to get blown out by God's Willing. I died the next turn. Fall of the Hammer and Temur Battle Rage for double strike dealt 11. Lost next game to God's Willing. Sideboard -4 Mardu Scout, -2 Goblin Heelcutter +4 Eidolon of the Great Revel, +2 Searing Blood It was the first time facing this particular deck and I'm definitely not prepared for it. I deserved to lose. Round 2 vs Abzan Control (Won 2-1) Stole game 1 with double Stoke the Flames as my friend missed the play of using Garruk, Apex Predator ability to gain life by destroying his Tasigur, the Golden Fang. He was left with 6 life and gained 2 destroying Monastery Swiftspear. The additional 3 life would have kept him out of double Stoke range and he wins next turn. Lost game 2 as I was too conservative and my friend capitalized. Had good luck as he missed 2nd black mana source. I curved out and won on turn 4. Dashed Heelcutter to make Courser of Kruphix unable to block. Sideboard -4 Mardu Scout, -2 Hordeling Outburst +4 Eidolon of the Great Revel, +2 Harness by Force Everyone plays differently so what I did might not be right. I think Hordeling Outburst is bad as Abzan has access to Drown in Sorrows and Bile Blight. Round 3 vs GR Devotion (Won 2-1) The matchup does not have much interaction. Either he ramps me into oblivion or I smack him into submission. Lucky me to have drawn 3 Goblin Rabblemaster and 2 Wild Slash in game 3. This is a stupid game. Sideboard -2 Hordeling Outburst +2 Searing Blood I think Outburst is slow in this matchup. Except for Sylvan Caryatid clearing mana dorks are the most important to slow them down. Round 4 vs Jeskai Tokens (Won 2-1)
Bad matchup. My deck loses to Raise the Alarm as the tokens can handle most of my 1 toughnes creatures. Managed to apply sufficient pressure to steal first game. Lost the next as expected. Game 3 was one of the closest games I ever played. Opponent fired 2 Raise the Alarm, 2 Hordeling Outburst, 3 Lightning Strike, 2 Wild Slash, 2 Treasure Cruise but did not drew Jeskai Ascendancy. We were down to single digit and he bricked on spells with only lands in hand against Rabblemaster and Outpost Siege naming Dragons. Sideboard -4 Firedrinker Satyr, -4 Mardu Scout, -1 Stoke the Flames +4 Eidolon of the Great Revels, +2 Searing Blood, +2 Outpost Siege, +1 Arc Lighning Even though prolonging the game favors the opposition but taking out Firedrinker and Scout was inevitable. Round 5 vs GR Aggro (Intentional Draw) 6th place. 3-1-1. Quarter final vs Mono Green Devotion (Won 2-1) Opponent registered his deck wrongly and was given a game loss. He accidentally wrote an additional Sylvan Caryatid of 4 instead of 3 due to traffic congestion which led to him finishing the deck list in a rush. I lost game 2 as he played turn 1 Elvish Mystic to turn 2 Courser of Kruphix. I won on turn 4 for the next game as his first play was turn 3 Hornet Nest. I assembled Foundry Street Denizen, Monastery Swiftspear, Goblin Rabblemaster, Hordeling Ourburst. Dealt 3, 5, 9 for first 3 turn which left him at 3. The insect tokens generated was insufficient to block the remaining creatures next turn. Sideboard -2 Hordeling Outburst +2 Searing Blood Same reasoning with round 3. Semi final vs Jeskai Aggro (Lost 0-2) Did not draw well for both games but most likely I made a mistake somewhere. Did not have removal for Mantis Rider in game 1 and a removal was negated by Negate. Had a hard time dealing with it. Overall I think I did well for the past 3 PPTQ. Finals, 9th, semi final. The 9th placing lost out on tiebreak. Never thought I will do this well. Played this deck for at least a month before GP Miami placed 2 similar decks in top 8. I must say I have good taste. Until the next PPTQ. Short update13/3/2015 Crashed at the PTQ in KL but had a good time. Had good food, met new people, and spent time with old friends.
Lost in finals of a PPTQ and ended 9th on another. So close but yet so far. Will try to attend as many PPTQ as possible and catch a lucky break. AuthorLaid back and enjoys a good laugh. Archives
