Post GP:KL29/1/2014 The trip was enjoyable. When friends asked how I did I used my hand and showed them the OK sign. "Wow! You in the running for Day 2?" No. I was 0-3. Laughs ensued. I did receive a pool which had Elspeth, Mistcutter Hydra, Nylea, and Prophet of Kruphix. Was not fortunate with my draws. Fortunately, I was not the only one who went 'OK' with Elspeth. A former Pro Tour Hollywood Top 4, National Champion shared the same fate.
The first trade was with an Australian friend of mine. Standard seems to be slow moving in Singapore. I wanted to shift Standard cards for other formats. It was the opposite for my friend. We both accomplished our goals and helping each other out is definitely good. Another trade was with a Taiwanese friend and he needed small cards to stock up his binder. Usually people will bring out the big guns and leave the chaff at home. It was my first attempt so had to bring along what I have and try my luck. Luck was on my side. It is a common misconception about being lucky. Luck is created, not given. Sitting down and wait will not bring you more opportunity compared to roaming around trying to search for trades. Yes we might end up spending 5 to 10 minutes empty handed but we have to move on fast. An example. I bought Vendilion Clique for SGD$40 and traded away for USD$50 value within 10 minutes. It traded for Birthing Pod, All is Dust, and cash top up of USD$20. I know, I know. No cash trades allowed but the GP is too huge to track so just be smart about it. That was a flat trade and no value gained. I should have tried to trade for bigger cards instead of getting cash to grow my collection. That trade allowed me to learn and understand how I can improve. Overall it was a very good experience and witnessing my friend win the GP has got to be one of the best thing ever. A very kind player waited until the end of photo taking for the mothership and asked for his autograph on the playmat. That player is the only one in the world to have his playmat signed by Fabien. BEAT THAT!! Grand Prix: Kuala Lumpur 201423/1/2014 It will be my first time trying to trade on the floor. Pretty excited!! Never know what I will encounter during the event. The most interesting part would be travelling alone and search for the hotel. The last time was in Seattle where I arrived a day earlier among friends and explored the area. Took my time wandering and tried to absorb as much experience as I can. I feel much safer there compared to Malaysia.
One concern. I'm not sure if I will be able to wake up on time for actual event. My sleeping time is around 4 to 5 am which is definitely a hindrance. If I don't wake up on time, will sweep the floor and cover as much ground as I can for 2 days. Kick in the possibility of meeting my cousin for dinner too. Brought along my 2 folders and box of rares to try my luck. Even though I do not have chase items but I will take my chance. Luck is created by seeking for opportunity, not by sitting down doing nothing. Every exchange will lead up to something unexpected and maybe I might hit a good trade somewhere. Never try never know. Will update how I did for the event be it trade or play. Wish me luck!! First win!18/1/2014 Managed to join a match of football organized by our local Manchester United fanclub. We won 1-0 and this is my first win playing with them. The team consists of semi regular players and players like me who would join in if there is a slot available thus there is no consistency.
We were on the receiving end for the past year and now the team is slowly building up confidence with another win today. We won 2 weeks back and there was no free slot for me to play but most importantly, we won. No matter how good an individual is, it won't feel as good compared to winning with a team. I'd take 1-0 wins any time. Habits17/1/2014 Have thoughts about what I should aim for this year. The chinese zodiac predicted it will be a bad year but I don't believe it. The only way things will go bad are those not within my control but I can still choose the outcome of how it will affect me. My biggest weakness is mental capacity. It is an area where I need to improve as it can unlock the potential within.
The first step is to change habits. Searched online and read articles on how successful people develop good habits. It looks simple but definitely not easy. Being able to follow a daily regime takes discipline which I seriously lack. Things are progressing at a good pace but I have not been able to capitalize fully. Having a fixed routine will do me good. Second is to invest in myself. I'm not the most knowledgeable person but I cast my net wide. From serious articles to nonsensical. I should pick up another language that will come in handy in the future like Japanese, French, or Spanish. Spend a few hours each day on self help sites or apps which are free instead of gaming. Next time I can curse in another language which is a total bonus. Perkele! Gotta change my habits to be a more productive person. Planning for GP:KL14/1/2014 Managed to find a cheap room for $25 per night located beside Sunway Lagoon on Agoda.com. Was thinking about booking a room with queen sized bed which cost $5 more but chose not to. The $10 saved means it will cover my bus ticket up to Kuala Lumpur. How so? I will be going from Johor instead of Singapore. If ticket prices did not change much it will be around $30 Ringgit and the return ticket around $40 Ringgit. That will total to around $80. Every dollar saved is a dollar for me to grow. I am pretty stoked as it will be my first taste of trading on the floor at big event. My friends asked playing or trading will receive priority and I have no idea. Ima go enjoy playing and trade between rounds. Will definitely drop if x-3 on Day 1 and roam the ground. Can't wait for things to happen!
